Local sightseeing
The Mariinskiy Theater, which stands about fifteen minutes' walk from the Matisov Domik Hotel at 1, Teatralnaya Ploshchad, is one of the most famous and venerated musical theaters in the world. Known better outside Russia as the Kirov, as it was called in the Soviet Union, the theater was founded in 1783 on the order of Empress Catherine II (Catherine the Great). The theater's ballet and opera companies have long enjoyed an international reputation rivaled only by the Metropolitan, La Scala and the Paris Opera. Under the artistic direction of Valeriy Georgiev, the theater continues to produce ground-breaking premieres season after season.

The St. Petersburg Conservatory Theater of Opera and Ballet is located directly opposite the Mariinskiy. It is a professional theater, with ballet and opera companies, a full symphonic orchestra and choir. It has also, for more than 80 years, been the training ground for students and graduates of the St. Petersburg Conservatory, arguably Russia's most prestigious center of musical education. This unique symbiotic relationship gives the public a chance to see the best young talent in St. Petersburg.

Just off Teatralnaya Ploshchad stands the Sea Church of St. Nicholas. This beautiful baroque church was designed by architect Savva Chevakinskiy and built between 1753 and 1763 on the site of an older wooden church in the Naval Court. As the spiritual home of the Russian fleet, it has been the site of thanksgiving services for Russian naval victories, and a place of worship for sailors preparing to go to sea. The church's attractive interior is crowned by the 17th century icon of Nicholas the Miracle-worker.
