Local Sightseeing

The main visitor attraction within comfortable walking distance of the Atrium Hotel is the Alexander Nevsky Monastery. St. Petersburg's most important centre of the Russian Orthodox Church, founded by Peter the Great in 1710. It has several impressive 18th and 19th century buildings, including the neoclassical Trinity Cathedral and the large baroque Church of the Annunciation. Its cemetery is also famous as the final resting place of many of St. Petersburg's most famous historic figures, including Lomonosov, Tchaikovsky and Dostoevsky.

Looking after the elaborate sculptures in the monastery's cemetries is the Museum of Urban Sculpture, which also hosts temporary exhibitions and has a collection of scale models of nearly every public monument in St. Petersburg.

One such monument, in the middle of Ploshchad Aleksandra Nevskogo, is an impressive equestrian statue of the medieval hero by Soviet sculptor Valentin Kozenyuk.
