First thing to note is that the Grand Hotel Emerald is not really in the centre. It takes nearly 30 minutes to get to the Hermitage by bus or by metro. That was my only complaint, however. I was pleasantly surprised by how kind and welcoming the staff were, and by how clean and comfortable my room was (even if the interiors were a little chintzy), and had an excellent traditional Russian dinner in the Gzhel Restaurant. Not sure what the other 5-star hotels in the city charge, but I certainly didn't feel I was being ripped off at the Grand Hotel Emerald.
