Podyachesky Bridge

Podyachesky Bridge, St. Petersburg, Russia

The Podyachesky Bridge, which crosses the Griboedov Canal not far from the Mariinsky Theater, is probably of most interest to visitors for the views it offers of the nearby Lion Bridge. The bridge was built in 1972 of reinforced concrete, to replace a wooden pedestrian bridge that had stood on the site since 1906. The simple single-span design incorporated granite obelisks with street lamps, taken from Alexandrovsky Bridge across the Vvedensky Canal. The bridge's name refers to the "Pod'yachiki" - under-clerks - who lived nearby in the 18th century.
