Commercial Art Galleries

St. Petersburg's gallery scene is booming, with new galleries opening every year (and older ones closing in this often unstable market). Commercial galleries in the city range from art stores selling prints, souvenirs, and low-cost works by young local artists to exclusive, heavily funded designer spaces catering to St. Petersburg's elite. The city is not yet a major centre for the art trade, so the majority of galleries deal in works by local artists, either contemporary or from the recent past. Particularly popular are the artists of the "nonconformist" school that thrived in Leningrad from the 1950s onwards.
