HOME HOTELS STONY ISLAND HOTEL LOCATIONS AND DIRECTIONS |

Nearest metro: Petrogradskaya
The Stony Island Hotel is housed in a beautiful Style Moderne building typical of the Petrograd Side, one of St. Petersburg's most attractive historic areas to the north of the Neva River. The hotel combines fast transport access to the downtown with proximity to the parks and historic buildings of the Kirov Islands in the north of the Neva Delta.
Petrogradskaya Metro Station is only two minutes' walk away from the Stony Island Hotel, and from there it is two stops to Nevsky Prospekt Station, which is a short walk from most of the city's major visitor attractions, including the Hermitage, Kazan and St. Isaac's Cathedrals, and the Church of Our Saviour on the Spilled Blood.
Moskovsky Railway Station is around 4km from the Stony Island Hotel, and can be reached by car in 20-30 minutes. Vitebsky Station is a similar distance, while Ladozhsky Station is in the far east of the city and can take up to 50 minutes drive. Pulkovo-2 International Airport is roughly 20km from the Stony Island Hotel. The ride to/from the airport will take at least 40 minutes, and up to 90 minutes at peak times. Pulkovo-1, which mostly handles domestic flights, is a further 2km out of the city. |
 | Local sightseeing |
While the whole area around the Stony Island Hotel is rich in beautiful architecture, the main visitor attractions of the Petrograd Side are clustered around Gorkovskaya Metro Station, about 20 minutes' walk or one metro stop away from the hotel. Among them are the Peter and Paul Fortress, with its numerous museums and the landmark Ss. Peter and Paul Cathedral; Peter the Great's Cabin, where the Tsar lived while he monitored the construction of the fortress; the Cruiser Aurora, the ship which launched the October Revolution; the Artillery Museum and the Leningrad Zoo.
In the opposite direction from the hotel, to the north and north-west of the Petrograd Side, runs the chain of small islands known as the Kirov Islands, which for generations have acted as a pleasure grounds for all classes of St. Petersburg's citizens. Kamenny Island (the Stony Island of the hotel's name), at the end of Kamennoostrovsky Prospekt, is the sight of a palace built in 1776-81 by Yuri Felten for Emperor Paul I. Although the palace is not open to the public (it has long been home to a military aviation academy), the charming neo-gothic Church of John the Baptist is worth visiting. Elsewhere, Kamenny Island boasts rows of beautiful villas in a variety of styles, with several particularly fine examples of Style Moderne architecture.
Yelagin Island is probably the most popular with visitors, thanks to the fact that it is given over exclusively to the neoclassical Yelagin Palace, built by Carlo Rossi for Maria Feodorovna, mother of Emperor Alexander I, and its surrounding parkland. There are no cars on the island, and it is one of the best places in the city for a summer stroll or a picnic. Krestovsky Island, the furthest of the three, is only really worth visiting for guests with small children - as well as modern elite housing developments and two sports stadiums, it is home to the city's largest amusement park and to the dolphinarium. |
