Just over five minutes' walk from the Acme Mini-Hotel on Malaya Morskaya stands the Winter Palace, the former residence of Russia's Tzars and currently the main building of the Hermitage Museum, the most famous art gallery in Russia. The vast collection of masterpieces was assembled by several generations of Russia's rulers and includes works by Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raphael and Titian, as well as world-famous collections of Rembrandt, Rubens and the French Impressionists (including Renoir, Cezanne, Manet, Monet and Pisarro) Van Goughs, Matisses and Gauguins, Rodin sculptures and scores of other highlights of world culture.
Five minutes walk will take you to the famous Bronze Horseman, the monument to Peter the Great, founder of the city, commissioned in 1760s by Catherine the Great. The subject of one of Pushkin's greatest narrative poems, the statue, by Etienne Maurice Falconet, is a symbol of the power and aspirations of the city's founding father.
St. Isaac's Cathedral, St. Petersburg's largest and lavishest church, is also only a few hundred meters from the Acme Mini-Hotel. Completed in 1858, it was literally the life's work of Auguste de Montferrand, taking a full 50 years to build and decorate. The result is an overwhelming combination of grand classical forms and byzantine ornament, executed using precious materials mined the length and breadth of Russia, including yards of jasper, malachite, and 14 types of marble. Round the base of the cathedral's vast gilded dome, the colonnade offers some of the finest views of the historic center available. |
